The analysis of powdered rock and mineral samples in the X-Ray Laboratory is carried out in Rigaku brand MiniFlex 600 model X-Ray diffraction (XRD) device; CuKα radiation (λ = 1.54059 Å) and Ni filter using a scanning speed of 2º / min, 33 kV voltage and 15 mA current conditions.
Whole Rock X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Analysis
The sample is pulverised (≈0.0062mm) and analysed in the range 2θ=2-65º. The mineralogical content of the sample is determined qualitatively according to the pattern obtained.
X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Analysis of Clay Minerals
The clay fraction of the sample is analysed in three different phases (under normal room conditions, saturated with ethylene glycol at 60ºC and cooked at 550ºC) in the range of 2θ=2-40º. The mineralogical content of the sample is analysed semi-quantitatively according to the patterns obtained.
